- Mike Bowman and Robin Roberts Severe Crash at NPK Rockingham
The NPK is back at Rockingham Dragway and for some of the racers, this weekend was horrible. We once again have terrible crashes close to the finish line and the only good thing that we can think about right now is the fact that both drivers were not seriously injured after the accidents. Firstly, Street Outlaws No Prep Kings star Mike Bowman escaped a severe crash on Saturday. Photo by Mike Bowman Racing When Mike managed to pick up a huge amount of speed to finish the race, his car got out of shape and started sliding all over the place. He managed to get the car straight and pop the shoots open although in the wrong lane and for a split second it seems he could in control of the car. Unfortunately, within a second the car started sliding all over the place and slamming into the wall before he comes to a stop. As if that was not bad enough by itself, the car catches fire after that which apparently bursts the fuel cell open and sends its contents all over the track as well as the front end of that Chevelle. Photo by Mike Bowman Racing As always, the most important thing is that Mike was able to walk out of the car even before the rescue crews were able to reach the damaged vehicle thus showing everybody on his crew as well as the spectators that he is fine and had not been injured, and the safety equipment has done its job. Photo by Mike Bowman Racing Video by Mike Bowman Racing Luckily Mike Bowman is feeling fine as he did not sustain any injuries from the crash but his car was dropped off to get fixed before he comes home. Let’s all hope that he will get that car running pretty soon. Not long after Mike Bowman crash, fans were shocked seeing Robin Roberts crashing into the wall during racing against Justin at Rockingham Dragway in Rockingham, North Carolina. The race was part of the Invitation Round Two. In the left lane we had Justin “Lil Country” Swanstrom and spooling up in the next lane next to him was Robin Roberts. During the race, Roberts lost control of his car then crashed hard into the wall before coming to a stop. Following the accident, he was reportedly airlifted from the drag strip to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. “Thank you everyone for the support and prayers! In time, Robin is going to make a full recovery. Shout out to RJ Race Cars for ensuring driver safety in every detail of the car, as well as Pilgrim media & the track safety response team for handling a bad situation so well. We will tell more when we have a chance to catch our breath.” Robin Roberts said in a Facebook post early Sunday morning, right after his accident occurred. Photo by Robin Roberts Racing According to his wife, Melody Roberts, he has broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a concussion. The collapsed lung will need six to eight weeks to heel. “Thank you all so much for your 🙏🏻 for Robin. He is going to be ok. We have some serious healing but his mind is good & the body will heal over time. We feel unbelievably blessed to come out of this situation as good as we did. He was passed out for a long time. He doesn’t remember any of it. He has 3 cracked ribs and a collapsed lung. He has a serious concussion but, all things considered, we are very lucky & blessed! The love and support has been amazing & God bless every one of you for being there for us. I know he is going to be fine because he is hungry again and snapping out orders. 🍗🍔🥩🥓🥞. That’s my Southwest Kansas Man💙😍💪🏻” Photo by Robin Roberts Racing Depending on the severity of his injuries, Roberts may be forced to miss the final two races of the season. He has one win this season in Maple Grove Raceway event against Jerry Bird at New England Dragway in Epping, New Hampshire. Photo by Robin Roberts Racing Next weekend, the teams will be competing at Alabama International Dragway. This event was added following the non-filming at Tulsa Raceway Park in August due to the death of Street Outlaws producer Mike Helmann. After the Alabama event, the teams will conclude the 2022 schedule at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas at the end of the month.
- Murder Nova Crash While Testing in Alabama
When it comes to the no-prep racing surface, we absolutely never know what’s going to happen. There’s a certain excitement that underlies when combining high horsepower machines and a surface that doesn’t exactly promote traction. Over the past couple of weeks on the DragCoverage channel, we have watched Shawn Ellington a.k.a. Murder Nova as he has been picking up the pieces as one of his favorite cars has recently been involved in a wreck while testing at Alabama. Shawn joined Ryan Martin and several others to test in Alabama. During a pass at Alabama International Dragway, his Chevrolet Nova would have an oil line blow off which created quite a mess under the car at high speeds. When the car ran over its own oil, it really lost control, violently swerving around the track. Fortunately, Shawn was able to keep control of the car. However, the car did get into the wall at the top end of the track and scraped the side quite a bit. This is certainly a situation where experience goes a long way. Needless to say, if it wasn’t for the effort of the wheelman here, things could’ve gotten a lot worse. Photos by 187 Customs Shawn said “Everyone says it’s not if, it’s when. I guess yesterday was my turn. Had an oil line blow and got under the tires went for a hell of a ride. Thankfully the chutes got me lined back out and kept the damage minimal. We will go over the car and be ready for Rockingham!” Photos by DragCoverage By following along with the video below from DragCoverage channel, we come face-to-face with that scary moment and watch as Ellington was able to overcome it. Video by DragCoverage Youtube However, a situation like this is certainly just another bump in the road as pretty much everybody on Street Outlaws seems to have become used to perpetually working on their cars. We are sure that a professional like Ellington will make a quick recovery as he has stated that he will be back in action next weekend at Rockingham No Prep Kings. Let’s wait for him!
- Ryan Martin Talks About Red Lighting at NPK
Most of the time, when something is happening on the streets, there are a lot more variables to consider and definitely an argument to be made on either side, however, when it comes to the timing systems that are put in place on race track, at times, it can be hard to argue. If you’ve been on social media at all the past couple of days, you’ve likely seen something about Robin Roberts redlighting against Ryan Martin at the Finals of Street Outlaws No Prep Kings in Colorado a couple of weekends ago. There’s been a lot of controversy involving Robin Roberts and Ryan and every single redlight that happened in the Invitational at Summit Motorsport Park. Photo by Fireball Camaro Facebook We can definitely see where an argument would be brought up because it appears as if the Fireball Camaro is sitting absolutely still until after the light turns green. In a racing format that comes down to inches sometimes, though, perhaps he was staged too close to the beams beyond what a human eye could pick up as a car moved forward ever so slightly or maybe the timing system underwent some sort of error because even machines like these are not 100% perfect. Ryan has not jumped the light in more than 4 seasons of No Prep Kings Championship and has never lost a race this way in the last few years, and all of a sudden he has lost two events due to the same problem, turning on the red light while launching at the same time as the guy in the lane next to him. Down in below video, Ryan Martin talked about the beam, red lighting and what really happened. Video by Odom Racing
- Kye Kelley’s OG "Shocker" Lives Again!
Those who have been following along with Street Outlaws fan favorite, Kye Kelley, have likely noticed that Kelley has been operating with a bit of a busy schedule as of late. As Street Outlaws promotions have spread their wings out to a variety of different shows and formats, that now means that racers like Kelley have to maintain an entire fleet of cars. Photo by The Real Kye Kelley Instagram Not long ago, the racer also lost his main OG “Shocker,” as it totaled in a freak accident on the streets, so we haven’t seen Kye Kelley run on the street on a third generation Camaro since then. He ran the Showstopper Camaro on America’s List season 2 and did very good, even though the car has a big 959 cubic inch motor. Photo by Kye Kelley Racing In a short period of time, Kelley finally got the new Street Shocker from Wizard Race Cars that is better than ever. OG Shocker lives on through this car that has some of the OG's parts and on a small tire for now. We all know that this is a continuous process of upgrades that needs to keep happening in order to get the car to keep going faster and faster and keep performing at the top of its abilities. This process is tiresome and takes a lot of energy and funds because as you probably know, all the best parts that these guys are using are very expensive. Photos by Kye Kelley Racing This time, we check back in with Kelley’s constant grind toward the top. In this particular outing, we follow behind the scenes at Kye Kelley Racing as Shocker takes some more steps toward becoming the dominant monster that its namesake once was. Video by The Real Kye Kelley Instagram In the video below from Kye Kelley Racing, we will get to ride along with this test session as Kelley picked the car from Wizard Race Cars to see the unveiling of this new car! - Big Chief's Done His Small Tire Nitrous Car
Those who have been paying attention to Street Outlaws probably noticed that a key face has been missing from the fray. Big Chief has been one of the main pieces of the Street Outlaws puzzle since day one. As the show has evolved and the action has gotten faster, so has Chief, but apparently, the show has evolved to a place where Chief just didn’t want to be a part of it anymore. Big Chief is now focusing on his YouTube channel Midwest Street Cars, where he works on his new car project. Chief keeps us updated on everything that he’s been going through and how he’s still managing to keep himself in competition even though the days of Street Outlaws cameras pointing in his direction seem to be over. Photo by Midwest Street Car Youtube However, just because Chief isn’t going to be on television racing anymore doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s giving it up entirely. This time, we get to see exactly what Chief is up to now that he has left his reality TV days behind. Photo by Jackie Instagram This time, we get to tune in with what exactly that means for Big Chief and Jackie. In this particular video from the Midwest Street Cars YouTube channel, we get to see behind the scenes of what he has been up to, and updates about what’s going on with the Cadillac CTS-V known as “Caddy Jack.” Among the topics of discussion are what to do when you need a gasket and no companies make one and a couple of other tech tips as the small tire nitrous car is wrapped up and readied for racing. Photo by Jackie Instagram Down in the video below, we get to watch as both Chief and Jackie go through their paces, testing out upgrades and making sure that every last piece of the puzzle is in just the right spot. We also get to ride along as Caddy Jack hits the streets to see if all of that time in the shop was time well spent or not. Video by Midwest Street Car Whether or not Chief will eventually make his way back to Street Outlaws is yet to be determined. However, we’re sure that in any situation, he will continue racing at a high level and this is just the beginning of the rest of his racing life!
- Bonnie Will Be Back. Inside Look on Lizzy Musi’s Crash at NPK Tucson
People who are seen as idols and are held to higher standards can be vulnerable and they are still human. That’s true for Lizzy Musi, and her car, Bonnie, who have been going through some challenges recently. Photo by Lizzy Musi The Pat Musi Racing Engines-powered Camaro and the team have been close to flawless to win over Ryan Martin at NPK’s Tucson Invitational. Eventually, though, it would feel like everything had worked its way out. After countless hours by the crew spent getting the car right after some “unpredictable” tendencies that would have the machine swerving to the side unpredictably. In fact, the racer says that she was pretty nervous making the pass after the adjustments were made as the car seemed to want to put her in some pretty dangerous situations. However, after putting in the hours, both Musi and her crew seemed to think that they had the machine figured out after working some late hours to get the car fixed and they were ecstatic after making it through the first round of the race. Musi lineup up against Ryan Martin's Fireball Camaro and, as the lights went green, it looked like she would score a comfortable win. However, the substantial lead would quickly turn into a nightmare as the suspension issues that they thought were ironed out appeared to come back, jerking the car to the side and sending Musi into the wall. Not only that but the car would slide across the track and hit the other wall as well. Photo by Lizzy Musi Racing Youtube Following the incident, Lizzy got head pain but posts to her Facebook page imply that she will be back racing very soon. The video below posted to Lizzy Musi Racing gives us an idea of exactly what the driver and her crew went through that weekend. Photo by Lizzy Musi Facebook Videos like this really give us the inside look on how the highs of the successful run to the lows of the crash and all of the effort that they go through in order to bring fans the best product possible. - Daddy Dave vs Ryan Martin Race Controversy at No Prep Kings Palm Beach
When the cameras get rolling for Street Outlaws or pretty much any reality TV show that one sees on television, a lot of conversation is cut out of the final product. As a producer of such a show, there’s a lot to think about before it makes it to TV screens. In an effort to maintain the audience’s attention, creating drama and getting rid of the fluff are definitely two priorities which is understandable. However, sometimes, it’s just nice to hear some of our favorite competitors from Street Outlaws speaking at length without editing coming into the mix. With a pairing like Daddy Dave and Ryan Martin, these buddies from the 405 don’t usually have a ton of drama thrown in each other’s direction. They’ve raced each other so many times that each one knows how fast the other is and generally if they do face off with one another, it’s a pretty straight-up and honest affair. Photo by Discovery UK So what exactly was it that stirred the pot between Daddy Dave and Ryan Martin at No Prep Kings Palm Beach? After we watched the pair go down the track, something seemed to be a little bit amiss when the win light went on for Dave. Dave certainly isn’t a stranger to winning but when his car appeared to be about a car length behind Martin’s, this is when things got a little bit questionable. As confirmed by the next pair of competitors, this issue happened due to a light malfunction. Fortunately, these guys are friendly, otherwise, that definitely could’ve spun its way into a whole situation that ended in a rerun. Down in the video below, though, we get a little bit more detail about exactly what happened and how it was handled. After getting the win light, it has to be difficult to hand over the win, even if you are pretty confident that there was a timing system malfunction. In fact, we wouldn’t be shocked if a competitor was able to force a re-run due to the error. Video by Discovery UK However, it looks like all was friendly after the race as Martin would go on to race in the next round to continue to compete for the event win. Video by Ohio Grudge Racing
- Ryan Martin vs Mike Murillo Ends in A Huge Fire in NPK Norwalk
Mike was racing Ryan in Round 2 of the Invitational at the Summit Motorsport Park in Norwalk, Ohio when his car caught fire. Ryan Martin had a very easy job passing in the second round of this No Prep Kings Norwalk on Summit Motorsports Park when Cody Baker made huge mistake after the start. For Mike, after one incredible first round passing one of the fastest drivers from 405 Jeff Lutz and his GTO, in second round there was an accident for him. Video by Upshift Shortly after Mike’s crash, photos of the aftermath were published online, and they weren’t pretty. Despite the damage to his car, Mike said that he was just happy to have made it out alive. The Street Outlaws star captioned a photo of the charred sports car. Photo by Mike Murillo Racing Mike described the wreck as a “nightmare,” but he assured fans that he was safe and sound, adding: “Well this thing kinda happened this past weekend. Our team just now got to our destination here in Ohio to where we can lie our heads and attempt to sleep this nightmare off. Unfortunately it’s still gonna be our reality when we wake up. Until then.. “I’m OK physically, for the most part, and that is truly what counts. But we shall discuss the content of these pictures and what we are going to do about it after some much-needed rest. Thank you for all the outreach from everyone and y’all truly make us feel loved,” the reality TV star wrote. Photo by Mike Murillo Racing According to reports, Mike was taken to the hospital and released after his injuries were assessed. Photo by Mike Murillo With the help of Justin Swanstrom’s Dad and Swangang, Mike was able to exit the vehicle before he was hurt. In his Facebook post, he thanked Justin Swanstrom’s Dad and his crew, who Mike said “most likely saved his life.” Video by Mike Murillo Racing Days after the accident, Mike took to Instagram to confirm that the wreck won't interfere with their upcoming appearance in North Carolina. “You can count on us to be at remaining events,” he shared in an Instagram post. - Kye Kelley Throws Down with Jim Howe at NPK Norwalk
For the second week in a row, we don’t see Ryan Martin and the gray Fireball Camaro went home with the overall victory. Despite bad performance at Bandimere Speedway last No Prep Weekend, this week they are back in the Great 8 Final against Jerry Bird and grab $15,000, plus 20 points to the leading points. However, Ryan Martin managed to get himself out of Invitational Finals because of the red light at the starting line. This is the second time after Bandimere, Ryan has lost a race due to the same problem, jumping on the red light while racing the guy in the lane next to him. Kye Kelley passed thru the final overtaking Kallee Mills and her sick Camaro – Golden Kong. Jim Howe came out swinging this season with the Guardian as he got the win over Justin Swanstrom and his bad to the bone Lexus. Photo by Howe Motorsports The final itself suggests that Kye might be able to reduce the points advantage that Ryan has at the moment and if he is able to get in front of Jim, well things might be much more interesting in the next few events that follow. Photo by No Prep FAM Follow along with the video down below from No Prep FAM as it takes us to the scene of the action, showing Kelley in his natural habitat as he goes up against Jim Howe who is also hungry for the win. Let’s watch the finals between Kye Kelley and Jim Howe as a Nitrous battles a Screw Blower for the $40 000 dollars and some very important points Video by No Prep FAM With the win, Jim Howe received the $40,000 purse. He got 20 points and now moved up to 13th spot, despite missing five races in this Championship season. That’s so impressive result for Howe Motorsports. Ryan is still leading the points with 560 points, basically 11 rounds over Kye Kelley that follows with 450 points. Photo by No Prep FAM
- JJ Da Boss' NEW ZIPTIE Is Back On Track
One of the most talked about racers in the beginning of this year has surely been JJ Da Boss and his wife’s terrible crash during the filming of America’s List. When JJ Da Boss and his wife crashed into each other after going across the finish line, an oil spill caused a fire inside JJ’s car and in the confusion, he swerved and hit Tricia’s car pushing it into the staff cars that were parked to absorb the impact in the concrete barrier. This terrible accident left Tricia with quite a few injuries while JJ has some severe burns to his face and hands. Photos by Muscle Car Mayhem Instagram Soon after this accident, these guys appeared on the show and shocked everybody by repairing his car and getting him right back in the seat. Photo by JJ Da Boss MSO Instagram Because of the injuries, Tricia Day was in no hurry to get back to racing and all she could do is help the team with their Street Outlaws Endgame build, however, during this time the MSO crew was working on getting Ziptie back in the races, be it on the street or at the track. A video by TheReal Streetoutlaws has showed us she joined a Ziptie testing on the street in front of their house a week ago and Ziptie sounds really cool! Video by TheReal Streetoutlaws Youtube Now we get to see the old school back in action at the arm drop race in Alabama where it is debuting once again in front of a huge crowd that came to see some racing. By following along with the video below, you get to see the new and improved Ziptie as JJ Da Boss and his wife make the first official run behind the wheel. Video by Outlaw Media Youtube
- Update on Big Chief and Caddy Jack. What Is He Up To Now?
We were introduced to Caddy Jack, Big Chief’s Cadillac CTS-V a while back and have watched as the car progressed from a bone-stock factory hotrod to a legitimately badass street/strip killer. We don’t know the full details of the build, since keeping details like that on the hush is a key part of grudge racing. However, we do get a rare glimpse at the car’s actual quarter mile performance potential when Chief’s “hired driver”, Jackie, takes the car through the traps with the scoreboards on. Photo by Midwest Street Car Youtube Nowadays, Jackie has taken an even more hands-on role in the Street Outlaws world than ever before, and her latest toy, an 8-second quarter-mile-running 2014 CTS-V named "Caddy Jack" is posed to take her to even greater heights in the racing world. The crew over at National No Prep Racing Association takes us along for the ride as Caddy Jack makes a couple of passes at Thunder Valley. If the thunderous performance isn’t enough to win you over, the scream from the car really pushes this thing over the top. It helps out big time that Lady Chief seems to have her act together behind the wheel. Maybe she’ll even give Chief a run for his money one of these days! Photo by Midwest Street Car Youtube Video by National No Prep Racing Association This time, we ride along with a vlog from the racer as he takes us along for the ride, sharing a couple of updates about what he’s been up to. These updates range in subject matter from how he’s been updating his shop with a little bit of maintenance to what’s going on with his cars. In this particular video, we get the opportunity to learn a little bit about how he has been upgrading his bright red Chevrolet Corvette and what kind of modifications are happening to the Cadillac CTS-V known as “Caddy Jack.” Photo by Big Chief 405 Check out the below video as he tells us about some of the most recent steps in his racing journey.
